The Night I Slept With A Rockstar…
…..and why it was the best nights’ sleep ever!
The perfect hotel room is such a personal and subjective thing. We all have our own preferences that define it – firmness of mattress, pillows (both quantity and filling!), room temperature, amenities…the list goes on.
To say that I’ve stayed in a few hotel rooms would be an understatement. Not all live up to expectations and very few tick all the boxes on my definitive list of perfection. So when you finally find one that does – you really want to SHOUT ABOUT IT!!
The Trafalgar St. James proclaims to be “a sanctuary of style, rest and play in the bustle of St. James” so my expectations were high. The check-in area is small and intimate, so you don’t feel immediately overwhelmed when you walk in, which is a rarity in so many luxury London hotels. Staff are personable and friendly and of course, have been expecting you all along! I am instantly put at ease and feel ever so slightly important. I skip along to my room (well skipping inside anyway!) with hope in my heart that maybe, just maybe, this could be the one…
And then I walk into my luxuriously appointed King Trafalgar Room and stop dead in my tracks, my overnight Antler wheelie smacking firmly against my calves. The space… the light… the huge bed with snow-white linen all wrapped up in a distinctly art-deco inspired package of loveliness. I even found myself walking over to the window to make sure that I was still directly opposite the hustle and bustle of Trafalgar Square, such was the stillness and tranquillity!
What this hotel gets so perfectly right is absolutely everything you could wish for in your room – the complimentary mini bar with a selection of soft drinks, juices and mineral water; and that golden egg of the perfect hotel stay – fresh milk, meaning that you can actually use the Nespresso machine for once. The in-room book selection is interesting, robes are fluffy and even the kettle is a work of art.
The bathroom has both bath and luxurious walk in shower, with Molton Brown amenities for that added sense of indulgence.
The attention to detail in the rooms is second-to-none, the art work is exquisite and prolific, but nothing intimidates, and you feel immediately at home here.
As a lone-female traveller, hotel bars can be intimidating at best, and slightly dodgy territory at worst! But I was determined to make the most of my stay and enjoy a nightcap before diving into the snowy abyss of my huge bed. What the mixologists don’t know about cocktails (both classic AND modern) can be written on a match-head. The cocktail menu is extensive, but they were more than accommodating when I wanted something that went slightly off-piste. I enjoyed a lively conversation with a very passionate expert about how James Bond had killed the martini – and let me tell you, stirred not shaken is the only way.
Satisfying nightcap sipped and time for bed. Time to dive into a tiny corner of my enormous bed for the night. I usually try and put a limb in every corner when I stay away for the night, but not so the case here. I found my comfy spot as soon as my head hit the perfectly plump pillow, and I can safely say that I did not move all night.
In fact, the last thing I remember before I drifted off into the best nights’ sleep EVER, was Sir Mick’s slightly sardonic smile looking down on me from above….
Thank you Sir Mick, and thank you to the Trafalgar St. James for exceeding all expectations…every box (and a few I hadn’t even considered) has been ticked off.
