The Wheels on the Bus…
“The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round…” – Most of you will be familiar with this fabulous little nursery rhyme, complete with actions to entertain and amuse.
But how is this relevant to business I hear you ask?
Well the wheels on the bus do indeed go round and round as we go about our daily work. However the key thing that makes the difference is who is actually ON the bus and where they are sitting.
Why? Because to build a successful business you need to make sure you have the right people on board and—most importantly—that they’re sitting in the right seats.
Getting the right people on board is all about figuring out who they are. Not who they’d like to be, or who their CV says they are… we’re talking about figuring out who they are deep down, what values they hold, and whether they’re compatible with your company values. Your team are ambassadors for your business and if they share your company values, it becomes a lot easier for them to project your message.
And while values will be shared, skills are likely to be diverse. And this is where we check that we have the right people sitting in the right seats. You need the right balance of personalities, skills and capabilities in the different roles of your business.
When you make sure you have the right people in the right seats, it becomes possible to maintain the quality standards your company has built its reputation on.
It is important to recognise that each organisation has its own individual needs, so the right people for your business may well be different to others. For example if you are in the customer service industry then you need a team that are people-orientated and prepared to go the extra mile to get the job done.
If you have a back-office, you might want the kind of people who would rather spend the day with a spreadsheet than in a room full of strangers.
So the key, then, is to identify exactly what your needs are and define what kind of skills and characteristics are required to best fill the seats. When hiring event managers, for example, we look for people with an outgoing personality who are full of energy, resilience and a can-do attitude whilst being methodical, focused and calm under pressure.
Along with a strong sense of our own values, we have found this to be crucial for attracting the right team—and also the right clients—to the business.
Our people are our assets, and we invest significant time in our recruitment process to ensure that not only do the wheels on the bus go round and round, but the passengers make it a truly magical journey.
